१९१० तमे वर्षे अगस्तमासस्य २७ दिनाङ्के युगोस्लावियादेशे प्रेम-स्नेह-दान-पूर्ण-हृदयस्य एकस्याः बालिकायाः जन्म अभवत्, यस्याः सम्पूर्णं जीवनं मानवजाति-कल्याण-सेवासु समर्पितं जातम् अपेक्ष्य निर्धनानाम्, रोगीनां, पीडितानां च जननी अभवत् तथा पंथ एवं सर्वसम्मति  सा शताब्दस्य जगतः महान् महिलासु अन्यतमा इति स्वीकृता आसीत्- तस्याः महामहिलायाः नाम मदर टेरेसा आसीत् ।

मदर टेरेसा एकस्य निर्धनस्य अल्बेनिया-देशस्य परिवारात् आगता । तस्याः पितुः नाम निकोला महोदयः, मातुः नाम द्राना महोदयः आसीत् । टेरेसा तृतीया परन्तु तस्याः मातापितृणां कनिष्ठतमः बालकः आसीत् । तस्याः बाल्यकाले नाम एग्नेस् आसीत् ।

प्रायः पञ्चवर्षीयायाः अन्येषां बालकानां इव सा समीपस्थं ग्रामविद्यालयं गता यत्र सा औपचारिकशिक्षणस्य ए.बी.सी. सप्तवर्षे सा पितरं त्यक्त्वा ततः कुटुम्बं अत्यन्तं दारिद्र्यं जातम् । फलतः सा षोडशवर्षीयः एव औपचारिकशिक्षायाः समाप्तिम् अकरोत् ।

यथा यथा सा वृद्धा भवति स्म तथा तथा सा अधिकाधिकं चिन्तनशीलः, उदासीनः, चञ्चला च अभवत् । सा किं कर्तव्यमिति ज्ञातुं न शक्नोति स्म । अन्ते मनःशान्तिं प्राप्तुं सा निर्धनानाम्, रोगीनां च सेवां कर्तुं निश्चितवती । ततः सा एकस्याः फ्रांसीसी भिक्षुणी टेरेसा मार्टिन् इत्यस्य नामधेयेन टेरेसा इति नाम स्वीकृत्य युगोस्लावियादेशस्य एकस्याः क्रिश्चियन मिशनरी इत्यस्याः सदस्यतां प्राप्तवती । मिशनरीभिः सह सा १९२९ तमे वर्षे भारतम् आगत्य कलकत्तानगरे निवसति स्म । प्रथमं सा निर्धनानाम् अशिक्षितबालानां शिक्षणाय आत्मनः समर्पणं कृतवती ।

एकदा प्रातःकाले कलकत्तानगरे पूर्वजीवनकाले सा संयोगेन कलकत्तापदमार्गे असहायशयेन एकेन दरिद्रेण रोगी वृद्धेन आगत्य तस्य असहायस्थितिं लक्षयित्वा तस्याः अन्तः तस्याः हृदयं दहितुं आरब्धम् ततः सा निर्धनव्याधिविरक्तसेवायां समर्पयितुं निश्चितवती । एषः एव तस्याः जीवनस्य परिवर्तनबिन्दुः आसीत् यः तां महत्त्वं प्रति नेतवान् । ततः चिन्ताया, परन्तु बहु आशाया, उत्सुकतया च सा १९४९ तमे वर्षे मिशनरी आफ् चैरिटी इति संस्थां संस्थाप्य निर्धनानाम्, रोगीनां, विरक्तानाम् च सर्वात्मना सेवां कर्तुं आरब्धा स्वस्य मिशनरी आफ् चैरिटी इत्यस्य आधारेण सा विश्वस्य विभिन्नेषु देशेषु षष्टिः विद्यालयाः, २०० तः अधिकाः औषधालयाः च स्थापिताः । तथा च तेषां माध्यमेन सा १९९७ तमस्य वर्षस्य सितम्बरमासस्य ५ दिनाङ्के स्वस्य मृत्युपर्यन्तं मानवजातेः मातृसेवाम् अकरोत् ।

टेरेसा न केवलं निर्धनानाम्, रोगीनां, विरक्तानाम् च सार्वत्रिकमाता आसीत् अपितु सरलजीवनशैल्याः आदर्शप्रतीकम् आसीत् । सा अनुकरणीयः अनुशासनात्मका अपि आसीत् । एतदतिरिक्तं सा महान् देशभक्तः आसीत्, राष्ट्राणां मध्ये अन्तर्राष्ट्रीयशान्तिस्य, परस्परबोधस्य च आदर्शसंरक्षिका आसीत् ।

तस्याः सेवाभिः जगत् एतावत् प्रभावितं प्रभावितं च आसीत् यत् मानवजातेः कृते तस्याः अविरामसेवानां मान्यतायाः अनन्तरं जगत् तस्याः कृते अनेकानि उपाधिः, सम्मानं, पुरस्कारं च प्रदत्तवान् १९६२ तमे वर्षे भारतसर्वकारेण तस्याः पद्म-श्री-उपाधिः प्रदत्ता । १९७२ तमे वर्षे अन्तर्राष्ट्रीयसमझौतां कृते सा जवाहरलालनेहरूपुरस्कारेण पुरस्कृता अभवत् । १९७८ तमे वर्षे सा विश्वशान्तिविषये नोबेल् पुरस्कारेण पुरस्कृता अभवत् । १९८० तमे वर्षे भारतसर्वकारेण भारतरत्नसम्मानं प्रदत्तम् । १९९३ तमे वर्षे सा राजीबगान्धीसंभाव्यतापुरस्कारेण पुरस्कृता अभवत् । अपि च यत्र यत्र गता तत्र विश्वस्य अनेकैः देशैः सा बहु गौरवं दर्शिता । ताभिः सम्मानैः पुरस्कारैः सह तया प्राप्तं सर्वं धनं दीनानां, पीडितानां च कार्याय व्ययितम् ।

अन्ये काश्चन महिलाः आसन् यथा सरोजिनी नायडु, एनी बेसन्त, इन्दिरा गान्धी, अरुणा असफ अली इत्यादयः केचन विंशतिशतकस्य महान् महिलाः इति अपि मान्यतां प्राप्तवन्तः; परन्तु मदर टेरेसा सर्वेषु महान् मध्ये महान् आसीत् यतः तस्याः सेवाः बहु अधिकविस्तृताः सार्वत्रिकाः च आसन् ।

मदर टेरेसा मानवजातेः कल्याणसेवासु एतावत् व्यस्ता आसीत् यत् विवाहबन्धने प्रवेशस्य अवसरं न प्राप्य जगति सर्वाणि दिवसानि कुमारी एव अभवत् अत एव सा लोकमातृकन्या उच्यते ।

तस्याः महान् आदर्शैः अस्माभिः प्रेरिताः भवेयुः।

मदर् तेरेसा सुप्रसिद्धा समाजसेविका । रोमन् क्याथोलिक् सम्प्रदायस्य सन्यासिनी आसीत् । अस्याः पूर्वनाम “आग्नेसे गोन्क्से बोजक्सियु” । एषा अल्बेनियादेशीया, किन्तु भारतदेशस्य पौरत्वं प्राप्तवती । १९५० तमे संवत्सरे ‘मिषनरीस् आफ् चारिटि’ नामकसेवासङ्घं भारतस्य कोलकतानगरे स्थापितवती । अस्याः संस्थायाः केन्द्राणि आभारते स्थापितवती । न केवलं भारते किन्तु विभिन्नराष्ट्रेषु स्थापितवती । एतेषु केन्द्रेषु अनाथेभ्यः, अस्वस्थेभ्यः, दरिद्रेभ्यः च सर्वविधव्यवस्था कल्पिता अस्ति । ४५ वर्षाणाम् अपेक्षया अधिककालम् एषा सेवां कृतवती । दीनेषु एव देवं भावयन्ती सा सेवां कुर्वती च जीवितवती ।मदर् तेरेसा युगोस्लावियादेशस्य ‘स्कूपेज्’ ग्रामे १९१० तमे संवत्सरे अगष्ट्मासस्य २७ तमे दिनाङ्के अजायत । अस्याः पिता निकोलास् बोजाक्सिया, माता ड्रेन् फिल् बेक्निल् । अस्याः सप्तमे वयसि पिता मृतवान् । अनन्तरं माता एव तां पालितवती । एनां रोमन् क्याथोलिक् क्रैस्तदेवालयस्य (चर्च्) अनुयायिनीं कृतवती । क्रैस्तदेवालयस्य सेवावातावरणादिकं दृष्ट्वा एषा प्रभाविता जाता । मम जीवने अपि ईदृशसेवाकार्यं करणीयम् इति सा चिन्तितवती । तेषु दिनेषु मया सन्यासदीक्षा स्वीकर्तव्या इति सा सङ्कल्पं कृतवती । तदर्थम् अष्टादशवयसि एव सा गृहात् निर्गता । मातरम्, सहोदरम्, बान्धवान् च त्यक्त्वा समाजसेवाकार्ये निरता जाता ।
